CareerGig has bought the Arlington, Virginia-based Moonlighting platform, adding the freelancer database to its own similar existing resource. CareerGig also provides a marketplace for services to freelancers such as insurance, training and financial services. The new entity will use the CareerGig branding.
Moonlighting was founded in 2014 and has built a database of 850k freelancers and small firms. CareerGig was launched in July 2019 to address a growing sector which said to be worth $440bn in the US alone.
The company aims to smoothe the path both for employers and contractors, and to become the leading community within the sector. Its software uses both AI and blockchain. Interestingly, the company self-describes as “not only offering a space to connect employers and freelance workers, but to give workers some much-needed security: The chance to have benefits”. Sounds like something that could work in many countries.
