US quoted STM publisher John Wiley has acquired Hindawi, an open access and fast growing research publisher for $298m (7.5 x revenue). Privately-owned Hindawi was founded by Ahmet Hindawi and Nagwa Abdelmottaleb in Egypt but is now based in the UK. The company publishes 200 peer reviewed open access journals. Its 2020 revenue was $40m. A particular attraction of the deal was increasing access to the research publishing market in China. The two companies have been collaborating in open access publishing for some time.
