The Global Media Weekly for executives and entrepreneurs

Tech co buys Girlboss

Attention Capital, a new US-based technology investor, is to acquire Girlboss, a women’s media company which connects millennial women through its professional digital network, podcasts and events.

The digital network functions as a women-only LinkedIn equivalent, while its events include the Girlboss Rally. Post-acquisition, the new owner intends to invest in a mobile app and radio networks. Girlboss was launched in 2017 by Sophia Amoruso whose former fashion venture Nasty Gal went bust. It has tapped into the growth of women’s professional networking, raising $3.1m in funding from Lightspeed.

Attention Capital was founded this year by three former media executives: Joe Marchese (formerly of Fox); Nick Bell (Snap Inc), and Ashlyn Gentry (Palantir). Terms of the deal were not disclosed but Girlboss was valued at $13m in its fundraising in late 2018.
