Novelist buys back The Believer

McSweeney’s – an independent publishing company founded by novelist Dave Eggars and based in San Francisco, previous publisher of literary magazine The Believer – has rebought the lapsed print magazine title. McSweeney’s sold the titles in 2017 to an offshoot of the University of Nevada (for $650k) which sold it on to Puerto Rican online media company Paradise Media (for just $225k). However, that deal came under fire from readers and contributors after the appearance of adult advertising within the brand’s website – and a sale back to McSweeney’s was hastily arranged at a lower price, allowing a print magazine to be relaunched later this year, supported by three donors. The title publishes literary fiction and essays and has had a circulation of c6,000.
