Facebook splashes the cash

Facebook is expanding the reach of its in-app Facebook News across the UK. Major news providers including The Guardian, the FT, Channel 4 News and The Economist have joined the rollout and will be paid for content. News Corp newspapers and Future, the UK’s largest magazine publisher, are notable absentees from the lineup.
Facebook says the app gives content providers more opportunities for ad revenues and subscription development. Users get top stories and a feed based on their interests. The service, which will gradually expand across Europe, is thought to be a response to growing governmental interest in forcing Facebook and other platforms to help to fund content providers whose businesses are being undermined by no-pay online links, digests and content cloning.
