The New York Times, on an acquisition spree in support of its strategy which has just notched up 10m subscribers, has bought the online word game Wordle, which has become a viral hit as users share their results on social media.
The game was launched only in late 2021 but founder Josh Wardle was struggling to maintain the game with its surging popularity and he has accepted a figure described as ‘low seven figures’. Wordle has been free to play and its users fear that the game may be put behind a NYT paywall.
