Vox buys Hot Pod

Vox Media, via its tech brand The Verge, has acquired the subscription-based newsletter Hot Pod, which was founded in 2014 by Nicholas Quah who will become a podcast critic in Vox. The newsletter is priced at $7 per month.

In April this year, Vox (the US publisher of Vox, New York Magazine, Recode and The Verge) acquired the podcast publisher Café Studios. The company was founded in 2017 by Preet Bharara and brother Vinit Bharara. The podcasts focus on politics, law, policy, business, history and news. They join the existing Vox library of over 200 podcast titles which claim to attract 220m monthly users. Ad revenue from the total US podcast market is expected to exceed $1bn this year for the first time.

The Hot Pod deal is Vox Media’s fifth acquisition in the last three years.
