Amazon buys MGM for $8bn

Amazon has agreed to acquire the Hollywood studio MGM to help it jump-start its stuttering Prime Video streaming platform and compete more effectively with Netflix and Disney. The deal is valued at $8.45bn including debt. MGM has a library of more than 4,000 films, including franchises such as James Bond and Rocky, and “The Silence of the Lambs,” “Raging Bull” and “12 Angry Men.” The TV portfolio includes “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Fargo” and “Vikings.”
