Next Digital frozen in HK

New legislation allowing Hong Kong authorities to freeze the assets of companies citing national security concerns have been used for the first time with respect to listed media. Trading in the shares of Next Digital, owner of the Apple Daily newspaper, controlled and 70% owned by Jimmy Lai, was halted when his assets were frozen following participation in a pro-democracy protest. He is already serving a prison term for a previous similar conviction.
