SPH goes non-profit

Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) – publisher of the Straits Times and Chinese language Lianhe Zaobao – is to move its media assets into a new non-profit vehicle, SPH Media. The stated aim is to strengthen journalistic quality and pursue digital development. Veteran journalist Patrick Daniel will return to SPH to head its media business and be the interim CEO of the proposed SPH Media Trust. He had retired in 2017 as deputy CEO of SPH.

SPH was established in 1984 through the merger of Straits Times Press, Singapore News, and Times Publishing. The company’s media revenue has halved in the last five years and SPH posted a loss of S$11.4m in 2020.
