The ‘video first’ Recount Media has raised $18m in a series B round from investors including Burda and Union Square Ventures, according to Axios. ViacomCBS was an earlier investor. The startup has now raised $31m since launching two years ago, and employs 40 people. The funds will be used to extend coverage of The Recount (“No time wasted. All bullshit eliminated”) to include business, culture and finance as well as politics, and to enable increased marketing. Recount was co-founded by CEO John Battelle, a journalist, web entrepreneur and author who had helped launch Wired in the 1990s, Web 2.0 Summit, and The Industry Standard. He had been named as “A Global Leader for Tomorrow” by the World Economic Forum.
