US outdoor media deal

Colorado-based Pocket Outdoor Media has raised new finance in a series B round, rebranded as “Outside” and made a further acquisition of Outside Integrated Media (following its purchase of Active Interest Media last year).

The deal with Outside has brought across magazine brand Outside, Outside Studios, and Outside TV (along with hiking, cycling and outdoor sports event apps.) The company made further smaller deals with the acquisition of: Gaia GPS, an app for mapping backcountry expeditions and off piste skiing; athleteReg, a platform for events and race organisers to register competitors; and Peloton Magazine.

The series B funding raised $150m. Pocket Outdoor was established in 2018 and includes: Yoga Journal, Ski, Backpacker, Women’s Running US (separate from the UK brand, published by Anthem), Better Nutrition and Trail Runner in a stable of 20 brands. The rebranded Outside company claims 1m paying subscribers with an average value of $70.
