AgriBriefing buys €2m Tallage

UK-based AgriBriefing has bought French company Tallage, provider of market data for agricultural markets across Europe, including grain, durum wheat, malting barley, biofuel and animal feed. The consideration was €2m.

The increasingly global information company AgriBriefing was founded in 2010. Its key brands include: Feedinfo; Urner Barry’s Comtell; Agrimoney; Farmers Guardian; LAMMA; CropTec; The Global Protein Summit; and Delphi. In its most recent refinancing, the company was valued at some £100m.

Tallage’s main brand is Stratégie Grains which has 350 customers for its trading data. The company was established in 1993 by partners Andrée Defois and Jen-Christophe Paquier.

In the second half of 2019, AgriBriefing made £3.85m of EBITDA on revenue of £13.9m. The company which employs some 180 people now derives 45% of its revenue from the UK, 42% from the US and 12%.

In addition to that clear shift in a business which started out as the UK publisher of Farmers Guardian, it is notable that the move towards paid-for information and subscriptions is reflected in the fact that, in 2019, the company generated cashflow equivalent to 86% of revenue.

The AgriBriefing transformation and this week’s news of Euromoney’s acquisition of The Jacobsen farming data in the US (see separate story) underlines the extent to which AgriBriefing represents an increasingly attractive potential target for the £1bn financial market publisher. Just wait.
