GEMG acquires City & State

Government Executive Media Group (GEMG), a Washington DC based news agency focussed on the business of government, has acquired City & State which covers the politics and government of the state of New York. GEMG intends to expand the format into other regions, initially California, Florida, Texas and New Jersey.

GEMG claimed growth of 20% in 2020 which may reflect the fact that government activity is often counter-cyclical. Its media brands include: Nextgov, DefenseOne, Route Fifty and The Atlas for Cities. City & State, founded in 2006, supplements its weekly magazine with newsletters and events, generating a reported $5m in revenue. Terms not disclosed. The acquisition was supported by private equity firm Growth Catalyst Partners which financed GEMG’s spinoff from Atlantic Media Group in March 2020.
